"I was nothing but a road to Midas. A means to get to where he wanted to go, and I paved that path in gold." My life has been made up of gilded lies. But death has been shaped from rot. Like a phoenix caught fire, I will need to rise from the ashes and learn to wield my own power. Because my wings may have been clipped, but I am not in a cage, and I'm finally free to fly from the frozen kingdoms I've been kept in. Yet the world doesn't want to let me. That's the thing when you turn against a king—everyone else turns against you. Good thing I have a different king in my corner. But even with the dark threat of Slade Ravinger, the other monarchs are coming for me. So I will fight for him and he will kill for me, and if we need to become the villains, then so be it. Because so long as I live in this world, I won't be used again. Please note: This is an adult fantasy series with dark elements that may be triggering, including past emotional and physical trauma

Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas

Aelin Galathynius, or otherwise known as Celaena Sardothian's path back to her throne has just begun. With many favors to be called in, loyalties that she has earned or bought, she will begin building an army to stand up to Erawan and the Valg demons. She has lost many friends and loved ones along the way. Many who had sacrificed themselves for Aelin, to survive, or to come to realize that it is she who must carry this burden. With war looming, Aelin must travel far and wide to gain allies. For any hope of a future, she must bring all nations together to fight Erawan and his armies of mutant creations he has amassed over the past decades. Aelin's transformation from assassin to queen has been followed by millions of people. All rooting for her to reclaim her throne and live happily ever after. If this is to be true remains to be seen though. An overwhelming amount of work and luck must be had to accomplish this goal. I personally don't know if it will be possible for Aeli

Lost and broken, a true picture of depression, Celeana must travel to a new land across the sea. All she truly wants to do is stay and avenge the brutal murder of her dear friend Nehemia. That is not in the cards for our heroine though. Instead, she travels to Wendlyn where she must confront her dark past. She must face a truth to her heritage that could change her life and her future forever. Back on her own continent, evil is brewing. Something old and powerful, ready to strike down any who would stand against it. With this ancient power's claws already ensnared in Rifthold, it seeks to take over the world. Celaena must conquer her demons and prepare to fight the evil that is about to be unleashed. Celaena grabs onto her destiny, and burns bright with her refound powers. A force to be reckoned with, capable of shaking the stars themselves. Another excellent read from Sarah J. Maas. Full of intrigue and action, Celaena's character grows in leaps and bounds.   So Celaena did it, she won the king's contest and so became the king's champion, or royal assassin. The King of Adarlan is an evil man and wields his power to intimidate. Scaring his court and his people into compliance. Those who supposedly rebel against him will find Celaena's dagger to their throats. Well, that's what the king believes anyway. Celaena is not as loyal to the crown as she pretends to be. A secret she hides from her closest allies. Trying to keep her secret becomes more deadly however when she comes across a true rebellion against the crown. Will she stomp it out before it becomes a threat? Or join with them to help destroy the dark king of Adarlan and the tyranny he beholds. Are her relationships strong enough to handle the secrets she must keep, or will they crumble apart at her fingertips? She is not the only one keeping secrets it seems, and to keep the secrets of others safe she has to face threat after threat. Will magic keep her and her friends

The book started slow and was a bit confusing the first couple of chapters. I didn't like how they introduced the characters or wasn't even sure who the main characters were going to be, I did finally get into it and am now on book 3!
